How Texas Insurance Carriers Handle Roofing Claims Differently

After a few hundred claims across DFW and Austin you start to see patterns. Different carriers handle claims differently — response time, adjuster thoroughness, how they calculate depreciation, how easily they approve supplements.

This isn't a hit piece on any carrier. Insurance is regulated and carriers operate inside the same policy framework. But the practical experience of filing varies a lot depending on whose name is on your declarations page.

Here's what we've seen. Caveat: individual adjusters vary, and a good adjuster at any company can produce a great outcome.

State Farm

State Farm is the biggest homeowner's insurer in Texas and handles a huge chunk of DFW storm claims. Big adjuster network, which usually means faster response after a storm — although in a metro-wide event they still stretch to 3- or 4-week appointment windows.

Their adjusters tend to be thorough on the primary structure but can move fast on supplemental trades (gutters, fences, AC). They use Xactimate, same as most carriers. Initial estimates are usually reasonable as a starting point, and supplements go through without much friction when the documentation is there.

One note: in some markets State Farm has pushed managed repair — they'd rather direct work to their network. In Texas you have the right to use any reputable, insured contractor. It's in your policy. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Allstate

Allstate uses independent adjusters in Texas more than some carriers, especially after big storms. Independents vary. We've seen sharp Allstate adjusters and some who clearly weren't up on DFW pricing or local code.

The supplement process works but can be slower, especially if the first estimate needs serious correction. Documentation quality matters more than usual — the supplement reviewer isn't always the original adjuster and they need the whole file to approve added line items.

USAA

USAA consistently produces some of the most thorough initial estimates we see. Their adjusters document well and the pricing looks like it's pulled from current local data. Supplements are less common than with other carriers but they still come up.

If you qualify (active military, veterans, families) the claims experience is generally solid. Their customer service reputation is earned.

Farmers

Farmers has been active in the Texas market — raised rates, non-renewed policies in high-risk counties over the last few years. If you're still with them, claims work fine.

One area they've historically been stricter: depreciation on older roofs. If your roof's 15-plus, expect aggressive depreciation on the initial ACV payment. You get it back through the RCV process once the job's done, but it changes the cash flow timing.

Texas carriers: TWIA, FAIR Plan, and regional writers

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) handles coastal property. For inland DFW and Austin, the state-backed option is the Texas FAIR Plan — usually last-resort coverage for homeowners who've been non-renewed elsewhere.

A few regional and surplus lines carriers also write volume in Texas. Claims handling varies widely, and it's often slower than the national carriers because the adjuster networks are smaller.

The pattern that doesn't change

Across every carrier, the pattern is the same: the initial estimate is a starting point, not a final settlement. Thorough pre-adjuster documentation, contractor presence at the adjuster meeting, and clean supplement submissions beat what homeowners get working the process alone.

The carrier doesn't change that equation. Good claim coordination does.
