What is a Class 4 shingle?
“Class 4” refers to the highest rating on the UL 2218 impact-resistance standard. In the test, a 2-inch solid steel ball is dropped from 20 feet onto the shingle surface twice in the same spot. To earn a Class 4 rating, the shingle must show no cracking, tearing, rupture of the mat, or other evidence of failure — both on the face and the back. Class 4 is the Texas standard for hail country.
A separate but overlapping standard, FM 4473, was developed by FM Global and fires simulated ice spheres at the roof at terminal velocity. It's closer to real hail physics but is less commonly referenced on residential product spec sheets. Most Texas carriers accept either certification for the discount, but a small number still specifically require UL 2218.
Popular Class 4 products installed across DFW and Austin include Owens Corning Duration Storm, TAMKO Heritage IR, CertainTeed Landmark IR, Atlas Pinnacle Pristine, and Malarkey Vista AR. See our full Class 4 product guide for a side-by-side comparison.
The Texas carrier landscape
Texas is the single largest hail-loss state in the U.S. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) permits — but does not require — carriers to offer an impact-resistant roof credit. As a result, the discount you actually receive depends almost entirely on your carrier's filed rating plan for your zip code. Two identical homes in Plano can see very different credits based only on which company writes their policy.
Broad, publicly reported ranges for Texas:
- USAA — historically the most aggressive credit on qualified roofs, often 20–35% on the roof portion of the premium.
- State Farm — offers a filed Class 4 credit in Texas, typically in the 10–28% range.
- Allstate — generally 15–25% on qualifying roofs in most Texas counties.
- Farmers & Liberty Mutual — typically 10–20%.
- Progressive — modest or no credit in many Texas zip codes, typically 5–15% where offered.
These numbers apply to the roof-covered portion of your premium (roughly 30–40% of the total policy in most Texas counties), not the whole bill. That's why a headline “28% discount” usually turns into a total premium reduction in the 7–11% range — still meaningful on a $2,400 policy, but important to set expectations correctly.
How to verify your discount before you buy
- Call your agent— ask specifically: “If I install a UL 2218 Class 4 roof, what is the filed impact-resistant roof credit for my zip code on my current policy form?”
- Get it in writing. Ask for the credit amount and the documentation your carrier requires. Some want the manufacturer certificate. Some want a photo of the shingle wrapper. A few require an inspection.
- Compare carriers. If your current carrier doesn't offer a credit at all, a different carrier in Texas almost certainly will. Shopping the policy on the same day you shop the roof often produces the biggest combined savings.
- Confirm the product qualifies. Not all “impact-resistant” shingles are Class 4. We only install documented UL 2218 Class 4 or FM 4473 rated products. See our materials page.
- Submit after install. Your roofer provides the manufacturer certificate. You (or your agent) submit it to the carrier. The discount is applied at the next renewal, sometimes pro-rated back to the install date.
Why Class 4 is worth it even if the discount is small
The discount is only half the math. The other half is the claim you don't file. A single hail claim on a standard roof in Texas now routinely means a non-renewal letter at the next cycle. Even if your carrier keeps you, the premium increase usually exceeds the cost of the upgrade within three years. Class 4 shingles dramatically reduce the probability of a claim-triggering hailstorm in the first place — the real financial case for the upgrade.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the Texas insurance discount for Class 4 shingles?
Discounts vary by carrier, zip code, and policy, but in Texas most carriers that offer an impact-resistant roof credit reduce the roof-covered portion of the premium by roughly 10% to 35%. Because roof perils typically account for 30–40% of a Texas homeowners premium, that usually translates to a 3–12% reduction in total annual premium. Your actual credit must be confirmed with your agent.
Which Texas carriers offer the biggest Class 4 discount?
USAA has historically offered the most aggressive impact-resistant roof credits in Texas (often 20–35% on the roof portion). State Farm and Allstate typically fall in the middle of the pack. Progressive and smaller carriers offer smaller credits or none at all. Filings change — always verify the current credit with your agent before you buy a roof based on the discount.
What is the difference between UL 2218 Class 4 and FM 4473?
UL 2218 is the industry-standard impact test: a 2-inch steel ball is dropped from 20 feet onto the shingle. Class 4 is the highest rating. FM 4473 is a similar standard developed by FM Global that uses simulated ice balls launched at the shingle. Most Texas carriers accept either rating as qualification for the discount, but a small number specifically require UL 2218 — check your policy.
Do Class 4 shingles pay for themselves in Texas?
In most DFW, Austin, and North Texas zip codes, yes — the upgrade cost over a standard architectural shingle is typically $1,000–$2,500, and the typical annual discount recovers that in 4–10 years. Class 4 shingles also resist hail damage, which reduces the chance of a deductible-triggering claim and slows premium increases.
Can I get the discount on my existing roof?
Only if your existing shingles are UL 2218 Class 4 or FM 4473 rated. The discount requires the manufacturer's certification. If you have standard 3-tab or architectural shingles, you must install a Class 4 product to qualify. Your roofer should provide the manufacturer certificate you submit to your carrier.
Does Square Construction handle the insurance paperwork?
Square Construction documents the installed product with the manufacturer certification and invoice you submit to your carrier. Square is not a licensed public adjuster and does not negotiate policy terms on your behalf — your agent or carrier applies the discount directly once the product is verified.
