The Complete Guide to Seamless Gutters in North Texas

Seamless vs sectional

Replacing gutters after storm damage or upgrading an older system? The first choice is seamless or sectional.

Sectional gutters come in pre-cut lengths joined by seams every 10 to 12 feet. The seams are where they fail. They leak, they pull apart, they collect debris. Most homes over 15 years old have sectional gutters.

Seamless gutters are fabricated on site from a continuous aluminum coil, cut to the exact length of each run with no mid-run seams. The only connections are at corners and downspout outlets. They leak less, look cleaner, last longer.

In North Texas, seamless aluminum is the standard for new installs. Sectional is basically a legacy product.

Sizing: 5-inch vs 6-inch

North Texas gets short, violent rainfall — storms that dump 2 or 3 inches in an hour. The right size depends on your roof's drainage area.

5-inch K-style handles most residential applications. Standard pitch, standard roof area, standard Texas rainfall. 5-inch works.

6-inch is right for:

  • Large rooflines with high drainage per linear foot of gutter
  • Steep roofs that shed water fast
  • Valley configurations that concentrate runoff
  • Homes whose current gutters overflow during heavy rain

We look at drainage geometry during the inspection. If 5-inch won't keep up, we'll tell you. But we don't push 6-inch on everybody.

Materials

Aluminum. The North Texas standard for residential. Doesn't rust, handles temperature swings well, dozens of colors, reasonably priced. Gauge matters — .027 is standard, .032 is heavier and resists denting better.

Copper. An upgrade for higher-end homes. Weathers to a distinctive patina and lasts 50-plus years. A lot more expensive.

Steel. Rarely used residentially anymore. Rusts faster than aluminum in DFW's climate.

Hail and wind damage to gutters

Gutter hail damage is one of the most underestimated insurance items. Dented gutters are easy to document. Adjusters can see the impact pattern, estimate hail size from the dents, and approve replacement.

What homeowners miss: if the storm that damaged your roof also damaged your gutters, the gutters are on the same claim at no additional deductible. We document every inch of gutter during the inspection.

Wind is different. High wind can pull gutters away from the fascia. Separated gutters let water run behind the fascia, which rots wood and gets expensive fast. Wind-separated gutters are also claimable.

Gutter guards

Guards cut down on maintenance and prevent blockage. Useful in North Texas especially given the live oaks and pecans in older neighborhoods that drop stuff year-round.

Three main categories:

Micro-mesh. The best. Fine stainless steel mesh over a solid aluminum frame. Keeps out everything including shingle granules and pine needles. Costs a bit more, works the best.

Reverse curve / surface tension. Water follows the curve into the gutter, debris falls off. Handles big debris fine, struggles with granules and small organic material.

Foam and brush inserts. Cheap. They clog over time and grow mold. Don't do it.

Cost

Depends on linear footage, gutter size, and whether you're adding guards.

Insurance-covered (storm damage): just your deductible. We document everything and attend the adjuster meeting with you, and gutters usually go on the same claim as the roof.

Out of pocket: $8 to $15 per linear foot installed for standard 5-inch seamless aluminum, depending on complexity and access.

Getting an estimate

Start with a free inspection. We measure your runs, assess condition, check for hail or wind damage, and tell you straight what you need — whether that's a full replacement through insurance or a targeted repair.
